More than once, I've seen it mentioned that followers can be taught new spells by commanding them to interact with a spellbook. I've tried teaching a few spells to ol' Lydders, but she simply picks the books up and places them in her inventory.
What am I doing wrong?

I have done a lot of testing on this and have yet to find a way for a companion to actually learn a spell. If you give them staves that have spells on them they will spam them. As long as they are not conjuration spells. I used Lydia and when given conjuration staves she will revert to her bow and will not even equip the stave that summons. I am also unable to unequip her bow and arrows. They seem to be 'Basic' companion items they always have.
Ultimate Follower Overhaul Sse Kit
So in short: No they cannot learn spells.
Although: If your companion is a spell caster they will cast the spells they already had but will not learn more.

You can teach your followers new spells via console commands on the PC version. To do so, you will first need a hexcode for the spell you want to add.
To find out the hexcode, open up the console (by hitting the ~ key) and type in:
Where
SPELL NAME
is the name of the spell you want your follower to have. For example, if you want your follower to be able to summon a Frost Atronach, type:This will return several hexcode values. The ones you're looking for start with the 4-letter string 'SPEL'.
In this specific case, there are 3 spells for Conjure Frost Atronach. I'm pretty sure (but not 100% sure) that the spells are listed from least to most powerful. Download my ps partner sub indo. The first hexcode listed for Conjure Frost Atronach is
000204C4
.To give your follower this spell, target the follower with your mouse cursor while the console is open and type:
And voila, your follower now has the ability to summon a Frost Atronach.

If playing on the PC, installing the mod, Ultimate Follower Overhaul, will allow you to get followers to learn new spells.

Lydia will use magic staffs, although I've yet to teach any of my companions spells from a book.
AngeliAngeli
You can add a spell to a NPC's spell arsenal, but your NPC will not use it, unless the specified NPC is programmed to. It depents if your NPC really is a spellcaster. If you teach a spell to a companion warrior, it will not equip/use it. And equipping spells with
equipitem
is impossible.RikRik
I haven't gotten it to work myself on a console yet either (I play on ps3), though I've read elsewhere that on the Steam version they have filled their Hireling's inventory, then when telling them to interact with the book, the only option they have is read.
PaulPaul
Lydia is not a spell caster. You should try the 3 students at the Mage College.

I'm not sure if the actual companions can conjure with battle staves, but i know that one of the girls in the College of Winterhold can summon both fire and ice atronaches.
Also, if you have at least 90 Conjuration, you could put a Conjuration staff onto a body (preferably one with all the armour still on) and then use Dead Thrall on it. They can summon out of that staff as long as it is in inventory but if it is not, just kill it and then put staff in and then resummon. They will use whatever is in their inventory so you can make it if you want so they are just spellcasters with staves and I really recommend this since if you do this, you can have 4 summons for the price of two.

vs.
vs.
I've perused the mod descriptions and they all seem fairly similar. Does anyone out there have experience with all three? What are the major differences?
Basic facts I've noted so far;
UFO - Probably the most simple and easy to use.
AFT - Seems to have the most options, plus you can turn your followers into werewolves, vampires or even vampire lords.
EFF - Allows you to have 100 followers with group commands to control them. Personally, I'm not interested in having more than one at a time really.
This comparison video is very helpful and informative; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k7IHXW4hbo&list=UUtZWnj8vRQqdqhXAz2Gb-AA
I'm leaning toward AFT at the moment for the greatest functionality, just hoping to get some opinions from /r/SkyrimMods before I install anything. Thanks!

You don't need UFO or other follower manager to install this mod!
Please remember that this mod don't give extra menus I never said that on description. The images above are exemples of injected perks from this mod and I used another mod to show you in the pictures. This mod only improve followers, You will see the diference in combat.
About this mod:
This mod will add perks to vanilla and DLC's followers accordingly with their original fight style and class - they will now level along with the player and will be able to heal themselves in combat (some more than others depending on their class and mana pool). I added some corrections on some inventories and default outfits, as well as some unique weapons and fighting styles (in the case of Serana). The mod have been tested by two different machines and with different gameplays. This mod is intended to bring up the glory and usefulness of the original Skyrim followers, thus removing the urgent necessity of installing new followers for the Endgame play. This mod also correct the gender animation for the edited npc's if starting a new savegame. I used the following list to make this mod. If you like any other npc altered or have any suggestion please leave your comment.
Requirements:
- Official Skyrim SE 1.1.47.0.8 or higher.
Mod Management and loading order:
Endgame NPC Overhaul must always be placed after UFO (or similar multi-management follower mods files) and always before any follower cosmetic change mod.
Example:
- UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul.esp
- UFO - Dragonborn AddOn.esp
- Endgame NPC Overhaul.esp
- ENPCO Dawnguard.esp
- ENPCO Hearthfire.esp
- ENPCO Dragonborn.esp
- My Home Is Your Home.esp
- Aela.esp
- Bijin Warmaidens.esp
- Serana.esp
- Marriable Serana.esp
- Marriable Serana HF.esp
- ethereal_elven_overhaul.esp
- and so on.esp
I recommend you use LOOT to sort out your loading order.

About Saadia:
Saadia is now a beautiful and powerful Ally if you choose to keep her; it was quite a surprise when I saw her engaging enemies for the first time. If you choose to make her a follower, please complete her quest line first to avoid any possible quest line breaking.
About Serana:
Serana is now the ultimate Vampire Killing machine. She has her original powers tweaked into some superior versions and she will dual wield with her unique swords. A must have in my opinion if you like Serana.
Video showing Serana altered by this mod using her enhanced skills.
About Quests:
As I said earlier 'Endgame NPC Overhaul' have been tested by two different machines and with different gameplays, from the beginning, and all quests have been done without quest line breaking.
Compatibilities:
- UFO;
- If you use Skyre then then after ENPCO give perks to your followers they get altered by Skyre re-procc system, it's perfectly fine if you run re-procc again - if you don't: they will get vanilla perks.
- Other similar multi-management follower mods have been tested and revealed no compatibility issues;
- Follower or NPC cosmetic changer mods might require patch on request;
- Works better in a new Gameplay;
- Compatible with current savegames but followers still have their default level cap unless you 'prid' them and type 'setlevel 1000 0 1 0';
- Other than that must be compatible with almost everything.
Incompatibilities:
- Mods that change, or allows you to change, vanilla followers' skills, perks, gear, inventory or combat-styles. If you try to use said mods with Endgame NPC Overhaul, you may not see the changes this mod applies to followers and I cannot guarantee their compatibility;
- There have been divergent reports about Amazing Follower Tweaks compatibility with ENPC;
- If you are using Amazing Follower Tweaks you don't need this mod because AFT already gives full perk and customization to your followers and more. If you don't use any cosmetic mods then you don't need any 'Miscellaneous' files that's fine. You can still use my mod with AFT, but if you assign a class to a follower (with AFT) or once you choose the AFT management to a specific follower my perks will get override by it's management.

Part of the fun for players in the world of Skyrim is taking a companion or few on adventures as they traverse the vast landscape, plundering dungeons and completing quests. There are a number of mods available already for Skyrim Special Edition that take adventuring with a partner to the next level. Here's a few of our favorites.
The fully-voiced delight that is Sofia is a lore-friendly (depending on opinion and play style) follower who accompanies the Dragonborn on his (or her) adventures. Voiced by Christine Slagman, the dialog is not only witty and humorous, but also reacts to surroundings, other NPCs and select quest lines.
Sofia is quite an unusual follower. She is tough, witty and just a little bit boastful. She has a strong fondness for the player character but her deliberate attempts to disguise the fact just leads to very awkward conversations especially as she usually says exactly what she thinks. Sofia is a tease and loves to wind people up which doesn't make her very popular with people. Her rebellious spirit and careless attitude often gets her in trouble. Not to mention her constant inappropriate comments which easily offend or embarrass people.
If you need a companion for life and are tired of the in-game vanilla characters, be sure to give Sofia a try.
Companions and Followers
This handy mod implements a variety of characters who traverse Skyrim and integrate with fellow NPCs. While they travel around the world of Skyrim the 12 followers do remain at a single location one day per week to make hunting them down just a little bit more convenient.
Here's a list of all the companions added:
- Alana: Female, Fire Mage and Conjurer.
- Shyvana: Female, Lightning Mage and Conjurer.
- Elsif: Female DarkElf, Frost Mage and Conjurer.
- Ashe: Female, Archer
- Coda: Male, Tank.
- Devesha: Female, Conjured Weapons.
- Haj-Meer: MALE SUPLEXING ARGONIAN!? Unarmed Only.
- Keiko: Male Kajiit, Two Handed Warrior.
- Leona: Female, Two Handed Warrior.
- Mira: Female, Paladin Archetype, Can cast weak healing spells on self, default weapon enchant Turn Undead.
- Mulgrom: Male Orc, Dual Wielding.
- Sheena: Female, Dual Wielding.
INIGO is an interesting Argonian who sports more than 7000 lines of dialog. Both a skilled warrior and capable partner, INIGO is able to be controlled effectively, even in combat, without the use of other mods and settings. For example, sheathing your weapon in battle will cause INIGO to cease combat and return to your side. And you can whistle to him too.
You will find Inigo in Riften Jail. He's next to Sibbi Black-Briar in the first cell on your left. Keep an eye out for notes referring to Inigo on your travels. If your character needs a reason to visit the jail they may give you the excuse you require.
Garm the Husky Companion
Our last pick is not of human form but a husky. Meet Garm, the husky companion.
Garm is a fierce husky named after his father Garmr, the guardian of the Norse and Nord underworlds. His mother is Jörð (Jord; Earth), one of the Jötnar. Feeling curious about the realm of Akray she disguised herself as a wolf and flirted with Garmr as a way to get in. Garmr was not fooled but he agreed to answer her questions if she would bear him a son, to which she agreed. The son she bore was Garm. He was born during the Warp of the West in the third era, around 3E 420, and is still considered a young pup by those in the Underworld.
Husky dogs are cool. Running around with one by your side as you slice the heads of undead Nords is even more cool.
